| myself
and my work (since 2007) |
Landscape photographer. Beyond the picturesque. Beyond the document. Distance, silence, context and time. About standing still and experiencing a moment of increased awareness. About the influence of knowledge on perception. The edge between image and reality. Dream! I started as a documentary photographer. Since then I am shifting slowly towards a more subliminal use of photography, using it as a medium of reflection. Colour, composition and light are very important, as is the slowness of the images of my recent work. Medium format or large format. Analogue. Showing and creating a fairy-tale like reality. Silence. A combination/synthesis of the german dead pan photography and a narrative and surreal touch. Most of my recent work consists of smaller series which eventually evolve into new combinations. |

We breathe. We can wander with our eyes through these pictures and pleasant feelings remains. The atmosphere is deserted, though. The scenes we see are in a pause, as pictures: always still, always a reminder. If any action would have taken place at these places, it was either before or after the moment of recording. Dieter deliberately picked these moments. The images get a shade of timelessness, they become stretched and endless. Where they were taken, is not that important. They can be looked at as mental landscapes, areas in our memories, reminiscent of rather far-away places, of other photo’s or paintings, of how it looks like in the film of a life, of mental states of mind. The strange and vast aspect attracts us, we want to enter the picture and start walking in it, as an escape of the plenitude, the bustle, the ugliness that surrounds us. The images Dieter makes are about a different world. An in an image transformed world that tickles our imagination. Images of wonder and desire in which we can dream away. Extended and without boundaries. [2011] [NL] [ENG] |

"When
looking carefully at dieter's
photographs, you may notice not only qualitatively good
images: they are also very interesting because they have
something to say. There is a coherence in his work, and it shows a
personal vision on the world. Because of his attention to colour and
the distance he evokes in his images, they have a pinch of
the modern, German photography. [in the newspaper De Standaard, 2009] |

Dieter De Lathauwer shows a coherent series of intriguing landscapes. In these landscapes we find the intrinsic escapism of our everyday surrounding which stay unnoticed too often. These slightly mysterious landscapes present themselves as transparent, desolate and neverending spaces. Maybe even another reality or surreality. De Lathauwer uses a very personal language in his images. Isolation, distance, silence, context and time are elements which keep on coming back. Het plays with reality and desire. The photographer has a keen eye for composition, colour and light. Images with space for stories. (Beelden met ruimte voor verhalen). [2011] |

"Dieter
is a strong opinioned person
and he is not easily convinced. What I find truly fascinating
in his work is how he can keep significant distance to the true subject
of a photograph, making it a small part of the composition, while at
the same time that small part attracts and retains my attention
immediately. In this tension lies a vision of the relationship we have
with our surroundings." [at the black snapper, 2009] |
